Ballet Cymru worked closely with the Headteacher and Family Liaison Officer during the selection process for the new cohort of Duets Scholars who will begin their 2-year training programme in September 2019. The children chosen showed talent in dance and engaged in the sessions with energy and enthusiasm. Moorland Primary School and Ballet Cymru believe that Duets will be an amazing opportunity for these children and we are excited to see them develop their dance technique and skills over the next 3 years.

Jukebox Collective is the newest partner joining Ballet Cymru and the Duets National Programme. Specialising in street dance, Jukebox Collective delivers the weekly session alongside the creative ballet at Moorland Primary School.

Ballet Cymru has a 7 year history with Moorland Primary and a school in an area of high deprivation. It is a very diverse school. There are 475 on roll, 40% are entitled to Free School Meals and 32 different languages are spoken with 50% of pupils classified as ethnic minority and 37% SEN.

“As one of the head teachers of the primary schools where a number of our pupils have benefited from this innovative approach, I cannot praise the dedication and commitment of the staff from both companies highly enough. It has been fantastic to see the progress the pupils involved have made, not only in terms of their dance skills but also in the development of their self-confidence and academic performance.”

The Duets Scholars were joined by Ballet Cymru Company Members in one of their weekly sessions. The Dancers learnt the street dance moves taught by Reuel and Jo-el from Jukebox Collective and taught the scholars some lifts and balances in the creative ballet session lead by Louise. Fun times had by all.

Ballet Cymru and Jukebox Collective were determined that Covid-19 wouldn’t stop us being connected with our lovely Scholarship students.

So with all the safety procedures in place and the go-ahead from the school and our funders, a weekly Zoom dance session is being held specifically for our Scholarship students. The students have a fantastic programme of dance this term led by Louise and Jo-el and it’s amazing to see the young dancers every week, have a catch-up and still keep dancing together.
